Summer Box League: Report

Congratulations to our St Ann’s Box League champs! It’s been a good summer, hasn’t it? Fine weather has led to heaps of competitive singles matches taking place at St Ann’s Well Gardens: I’m not sure we’ve ever had a busier Box League season.

Let us start with the Most Wins category. Darragh Finn, of Division 3, played a whopping 11 matches, registering 10 victories. Again, we are searching the database for any player in any division who has clocked up 10 victories in a season, and we cannot find an equal. Well done Darragh, and apologies for mentioning that single defeat, 6-1, 6-2 vs James Ayling [WWWWWW]. Mihai Inceu and Ben Walsh were runners-up in D3 with seven wins each.

Division 3 had the highest total of completed matches, with a remarkable 49 fixtures in their division alone. Outstanding.

Arjun Thakkar, St Ann's Tennis Box League Division 1 champion

The next most wins came in our top division. Division 1 newboy Arjun Thakkar, freshly promoted from D2, earned a perfect eight wins and no defeats record to take the Division 1 title ahead of Will Jefferies and Dan O’Shea, both with five wins. Our new champ dropped just one set throughout, eventually overcoming Ed Davis 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Arjun’s rate of improvement since joining St Ann’s last year is quite something.

Division 2 was also busy with a total of 35 games played. Well done, lads. The D2 champion was Andy Gray, just two points ahead of Rob Hutchinson, with Michael Doyle third. Andy won seven matches, losing just one epic to James Booth, who prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

There was a clear winner in Division 4. Respect to Lex Lewis, who laid down a strong WWWWW record to win the division comfortably. Lex sealed the title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over runner-up Alejandro Marin.

We’ve had a complaint. Someone said that Henry Roberts of D5 is good at tennis, and keeps getting the ball back. Now that we have the evidence — played six, five wins and one defeat — we can confirm that this is indeed the case. Congratulations on winning the division, Henry. The only player to work him out was Richard Harrison [WWWW], who won their head-to-head 6-2, 6-2.

INJURIES: If you have sustained an injury, or have been unavoidably detained by UFOs/Family/Work, I am always happy to refund or roll you over to the next season. We know how hard it can be to fit in all those fixtures, and life sometimes gets in the way.

The next Box League is now available for registration. We have a ‘hard’ deadline for the end of day Wednesday 02 September, after which registration will close. We take care forming our ‘Boxes’, and latecomers can mess up our homework. So please book early to avoid disappointment. Early numbers are strong. Register for the Autumn Box League season here

AUTUMN FESTIVAL: As well as our usual doubles and mixed doubles, we will be including a singles knockout tournament as part of our Autumn Festival, targeted at our best male and female singles players, in our schedule. This will likely be a fun Fast4 compass knockout, where everyone gets at least three matches. Hard work, but fun. Watch this space.
