Winter Box League report

Thanks to all players who took part in a vigorous and well contested Winter Box League. Despite the miserable conditions for most of February, all the divisions were keenly fought, with heaps of matches played. See full results here

Division 1 was an absolute barnstormer, with 25 matches played, and the result in the balance right up to deadline day.

Dan O’Shea [P8 W5 L3] won top place with 26 points, just two points ahead of Diego Chernichero. Diego won the head-to-head 4&4, but Dan crammed in his entire allocation of matches, including two on the final weekend, to bag the points and secure overall victory. Ed Davis was third on ‘goal difference’, tied on 17 points with Aled Roberts and Ryan Kingston-Jones.

There was less drama in Division W, thanks to a perfect season by Tish Zeeman, securing top spot with a WWWWW record. Tish was our 2024 St Ann’s Women’s Singles champion, and is back in form for this summer’s Parks League. Tina Li is an excellent new member who made a promising Box League debut in second place.

Powering up to D1 next season will be Martin Burchell, who topped Division 2 with 26 points. Martin enjoyed a near perfect record, only succumbing to Tom Mount 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Runner-up was Thomas Durkin, pushed hard by Rob Hutchinson and Phil Buckingham.

[There were issues in D2 due to semi abandoned games and a wrongly entered score (innocently). We are working on technical solutions in the interests of fairness all round!]

Division 3 saw James Booth secure top spot comfortably, thanks to his undefeated WWWWWW record. Michael Doyle heroically completed all his matches by working his way through all eight opponents in the division. But even Michael took a thumping against Mr Booth, falling 0&1. The ever improving Miguel Cosme [played 7) was a strong third with 23 points.

Participation was patchy in Division 4, with the exception of Alejandro Marin, who was the comfortable winner with 23 points. After losing his opening match to Neil Stoddart, Alejandro strung together five consecutive wins to secure top place.

Your tournament director was delighted to take part this winter, warmed-up by four hard fought matches in ‘Group of Death’ Division 4. Thoughts:
a) Arranging matches is hard
b) Singles tennis is tough. No easy games etc.
c) Our webmaster did a bang up job with the scoring system and the league tables
d) We have some lovely members at St Ann’s Tennis
