Box League: Round Up

Thanks to all Box League participants, and to our individual division champions. Great effort over the last weekend to get some more matches played.

Let’s start at the bottom. Laurence Stephens, a new member with a big lefty forehand, crushed Division 5 with a string of victories, leaving him comfortably ahead of chasers Henry Roberts and James Gardner.

Divisions 4a and 4b were both busy. In 4b, Tom Dalton swept through seven consecutive victories to secure top place, with Miguel Cosme in second. Division 4a was more delicately balanced, with Tasha Carey and Rob Bennett duking it out for first place. Well done both players for getting through your matches. And there was drama at the Carey/Bennett show down on the final weekend when Tasha had to withdraw at 1-1 after a fall. We hope the elbow gets better soon Tasha. Rob takes the title by one point: such is the ruthless nature of elite sport.

Division 3 was not quite the tennis festival we were hoping for, with Gus Mark sneaking top place with a modest LWW record ahead of Adam Smith [WLW] by one point, on set difference. Adam won the head-to-head 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, but Gus nailing that first set made all the difference in the final reckoning.

Division 2 was the busiest division of all. New member Tom Durkin made an excellent debut with a strong WLWLWW record for third place. Ed Davis and Andy Gray did battle once again, and the outcome was predictably close, with Andy edging the group on 25 points ahead of Ed (24 points).

Andrew Woolston has left us temporarily due to family commitments. He can take comfort in his Division 1 victory, where he finished just ahead of Aled Roberts [LWWL] with an unbeaten WWW record.

The next Box League will be open for registration in August, with the new season starting at the beginning of September.
